Due to the situation of the world today, with the covid-19 pandemic and all, time seems to have slowed down for a lot of people, this maybe due to losing a job, schools closing or just the fact that remote activities give you more time on your hands. and with that extra time a lot of people have set out on their coding journeys ,learning to code from scratch or using the previous knowledge they had to pursue more opportunities.
there are a lot of free resources out there for beginners and even intermediate devs, but you know whats better than free courses?......
thats right! premium courses!
As a result of this pandemic a lot of online learning platforms solely,or through partnerships, have given scholarships and discounts on their courses for you to be able to get access to their courses essentially for free as a way to support people looking for a career change or newbies setting out on their tech journey.
To the best of my knowledge, I've curated a list of some of these premium resources that can help you in your tech journey and how you can get them [legally!]:
1. codecademy
In April, codecademy set out to find a way to donate 100,000 Pro memberships to workers impacted by COVID-19. In order to accomplish this, they offered to give away 5 Pro memberships for every 1 purchased.
Thanks to the generosity of learners from around the world, they’ve reached their goal! and are now able to donate Pro access to up to 100,000 impacted workers. visit their webpage to sign up and get a free 3 month subscription
2. coursera
earlier this year coursera announced some courses with free certificates and later on created a portal for college and university students to be able to access all courses for free. as a student you can get the chance to enroll in any of their 3800 courses
3. pluralsight
during the month of april, they gave free access to their entire course library but now they give access to 5 free weekly courses. check to see if you're interested in any of them!
4. educative scholarship
If you’re one of the millions of people around the world whose life or livelihood has been interrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic, they want to help. their scholarship has 2 paths,one will give you free access to the learning track Become a Frontend Developer , worth over $115, and the other which gives you acces to their best selling machine learning track
5. udacity scholarship
udacity is a leading tech upskilling platform and their nanodegrees are held in high esteem(for a high cost obviously). thankfully there are usually scholarship opportunities to waive this fee. at the time of writing, there are 2 available scholarships you can apply for:
the pledge to equality scholarship focused on the black community and the bertelsman tech scholarship looking to upskill learners in fields of Cloud Computing, Data Science or Artificial Intelligence.
6. Treehouse
Golly, was this hard to find.
Treehouse or is an online technology school that offers beginner to advanced courses in web design, web development, mobile development and game development taught by team of expert teachers. not as popular as the bigger boys up there, but they're doing great! as a result of their partnership with onramp.io , titled "summer of reskilling" ,you can get access to courses such as full stack development (with javascript), android development and data analysis. the partnership isnt limited between onramp and treehouse so you would see more courses from the likes of udemy and general assembly
7. openclassrooms
level up by openclassrooms is an initiative by open classrooms (and partners) to give scholarships and discounts to learners. and if you work with one of their partners you could access their courses for free!
8. freeCodecamp
it may not be premium, but it sure is an honorable mention! with a curriculum just as good as any of the premium courses, this would definetly help any newbie on his path to being an awesome dev!
